Samsung ST100 Digital Camera

The Samsung ST100 DigitalCamera is small enough to fit into almost any pocket but it also has one of the largest TFT screens around. It is totally touchscreen in operation so those who have been brought up on touch will certainly enjoy using this camera.
The Samsung ST100 Digital Camera measures 10x6x2cm and weights only 155grams.
The face has the lens and the flash both are in the same plain with the flash central on the unit and the lens towards the right edge. It uses a periscope type device inside the camera to zoom as the lens never visually moves in or out.
The right side has an anchor point for a wrist strap, the left side just say 14.2MP the resolution. The base has a door behind which are the solid battery and any SD card you might use, it has has the connection for the provided proprietary USB lead and of course a tripod screw fitment point. The back is the 7.7x4.6cm TFT which using the imperial measure (diagonally) is 3.5inches. This leaves the only other item the top of the camera.

Samsung ST100 Review

ST100_FS1_B.jpg
Samsung's most compact dualscreen camera to date, the ST100 is quite different from past models in this line. While sharing almost identical specs to the new ST600, the ST100 uses an internal 5x optical zoom lens, and is noticeable smaller. Like the ST600, it features a larger 1.8-inch front LCD screen, allowing you to share images with your subjects or easily capture self-portraits.

The ST100 boasts 14-megapixels of resolution, a 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD on the back of the camera, smart face recognition, and 720p HD video capture.

Beautiful Moment SAMSUNG ST100

I’m introducing the first camera from Samsung in the second half of 2010, the ST100. The ST100 which will take the beautiful moment has more beautiful design than the moment with great functions which have been introduced by Samsung.

It comes with 4 different colors such as violet, gold, hot pink, and black. Except the black one, all colors are very special enough to get an attention of people. The rounded appearance and coated surface by shinny material are really awesome.

It has the inner zoom type optical 5x zoom Schneider lens with 35-175mm of focal length, so it has better length than other inner zoom lenses, and by adopting the 1/2.3” CCD, it supports 14.2M pixels still images and 720p HQ movie recording.

To be honest, before introducing this to you, I didn’t know this existed. When finding out this, we were in shock and made the headline as ‘Hidden Dual Viewer’, even though it was a little old-fashioned.

The front LCD which Samsung officially uses ‘2 View Dual LCDs’ is hidden in the surface and shown up. It keeps the design and colors, but is distinguished from the previous front LCD cameras. The ST100 has the quite big 1.8” front LCD in 100x60x200mm and 135g of body, so it’s convenient for self shots and other additional functions. I was worried that the shinny material of the surface might interrupt the backlight of the front LCD, but it was not a problem like the picture.

The design of the top of the ST100 is noticeable with the 7 degree slanted design which makes self shots more convenient. Especially, the rounded button design, light, and play button supporting one touch play are hidden practice in the design.

It took the self shot by using the front LCD. This camera also supports smile shot function which automatically takes a shot when it detects a smile.

If this great function was difficult to use, no one would use it. However, it’s not in the ST100. Users can just push F.LCD button on the top and select one of the 7 menus. It has 5 useful functions such as Self shot, Children mode showing funny animation to get an attention of children, Couple mode for 2 people, Jump shot, and Smile icon showing smile icon in half shutter to tell you when to smile.

It supports 11.52M pixels and has the 3.5” wide Full HD touch LCD. Most of the touch menus are inactivated to prevent inconvenience. The key icon on the lower side of the screen is only activated, and this is to unlock the hold function, so pushing the button, some menus become available to use.

Let’s me introduce self shot images by using Self Shot option. We have already received the permission to upload these pictures.

Looking at this picture, eyes are looking at the inner zoom lens. It becomes an awkward picture, because this person is not used to self shots.

These 2 pictures were taken by people who know how to set the composition. It looks much better than the previous picture in the eye and angle.

In order to take a great self shot or couple shot, one hand needs to be relaxed. Holding the shutter part, not inner zoom lens, it automatically takes a good picture. This was from a lot of test and holding the inner zoom lens part, the part of a palm between thumb and index filter used to hide the lens. Therefore, users need to remember that the ST100 automatically recognizes the face and the light weight of the camera.

The ST100 has all the functions which have been applied to Samsung cameras and starting model of the second half of 2010. Therefore, by using the 11.52M pixels 3.5” wide full touch LCD, it makes more convenient with additional functions in the operation menu.

Let’s take a look at the composition of the main menu. Some customers thought the main menu is a separate mode which gathers convenient functions, but actually Program mode which allows users to change all the specifications of the camera is the real main menu. The ST100 uses the touch function as much as possible, so it arranges mode icon on the left top, basic icons such as flash, focus and timer below, and on the right side, movement of menu icon and menu icon are arranged and on the lower side, pop up type sub menu is separately located, so it minimizes the necessity to find the menu icon to change the function.

The ST100 has Smart Auto 2.0 which automatically detects the 17 modes and helps take perfect shots. It supports 12 different scene modes and 9 kinds of photo sizes such as 4320x3240 14M pixels, 4320x2880 12M pixels, and 4320x2432 10M pixels. Especially, the 10M allows users to watch images on HDTV and HD LCD monitor as a full screen. It supports ISO 80 to 3200 and ±2 level of exposure compensation with the increments of 1/3.

Among the above pictures, the first 2 pictures were taken without EV and other 2 pictures were taken with -1.30 and -1.70 EV. Actually, it’s really difficult to describe skies well as a compact digital camera, but the ST100 was very good at this. For your information, this type of sky shots have been included in the basic test item, because the sky is the most frequently taken for outdoor shots.

(Sketch Style)

(Without Defog style and with Defog)

The ST100 has Smart Filter function, and in this part 2 kinds of styles have been added. Therefore, Smart Filter is also divided into Smart Lens effect such as Miniature, Vignetting, Fish eye 1/2 and Style such as Sketch and Defog.

For customers living in HD and YouTube generation, the movie recording is more important. Good mobility is also good to have. The ST100 supports 720p HQ HD movie and 320 size movie recording for web sites. It also supports Smart Movie recording by automatically detecting the situations, and for normal movie recording, Smart Filter can be applied. Through the 2 styles of Smart Lens effects, users will have more fun to watch funny movies even in the web sites.

Samsung cameras have advanced portrait functions in the camera by reducing hand blur and making faces more vivid, and this is because portrait shot is the most frequently used. Including Face Detection, the technology to see the change of faces and various options regarding the technology now reached the peak, I think. Social Network is a new paradigm to know others, and it’s also very good reason to use the ST100 after registering faces as My Star. Samsung allows users to find pictures and enjoy them more quickly.

In play mode, including Smart Album, various retouching functions are supported. The important thing in this retouching part is that the original remains and retouched images are stored separately. Therefore, it’s very convenient for users to have both.

Besides, there’s a play mode maximizing the touch function, so pushing your finger to the direction you want, the images taken look like a frame which images come and are rotated.

The ST100 is the first Samsung camera to have the various technologies which Samsung cameras have developed. Especially, the beautiful body line harmonized with the inner zoom and hidden front LCD surprising everyone make up the weakness of the previous front LCD camera. (As a matter of face, in the previous front LCD camera, the front LCD wasn’t fully hidden.)

It also supports Gesture UI, effects, upgraded Smart Filter and Smart Auto 2.0 for users to remember the beautiful moment more beautifully as a Samsung’s beautiful camera.

Visiting TOAE (Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition)

Samsung Electronics has provided the author of this article with the mentioned digital imaging device.
TOAE – Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition – is one of the biggest event in Toronto. Exhibition happens every year in July at Nathan Phillips Square, where is in front of Toronto City Hall in downtown.
The truth is, I’ve never been there before till now for past 9 years in Canada.. Real reason that I paid to visit the exhibition was my friend who participated the exhibition this year. (Plus, it’s free! haha) She, Ivanne Binetruy, was one of my colleagues from college and now she’s trying to be a professional jewellery designer by her own. Even though she was the mother of two children, she was always passionated student at school and I had no doubt that she’ll be always the best in her profession field and now, here she is, representing her own works. :)
There were so many things to watch, but I visited Ivanne’s booth first to congrats her very first exhibition after graduated from school. :)

And guess what? She got ‘Jewellery Student Award’ from the exhibition! What did I say? She’s still the best student here, haha. (She graduated this year, but she was student when she applied for this exhibition.)

My personal favourite from her works: the ‘Diamond’ series on the left side and ‘Candy Child’ series on the right side. ‘Candy Child’ series are playful and brilliant too. Those colourful particles are actually children’s toy – sticky and easy to form so you can take it out from silver pendant or ring and change to other colour whenever you want. :)

When that little lady saw the ‘Candy Child’ series, she said “I have that toy too, I know this!” As a mother of two, Ivanne was good at handling children at the exhibition. Maybe I should learn from her sometime later.. Haha. Quick promotion here! Ivanne just opened her website so you can see her works at here: http://www.ivannebinetruy.com/ She’s currently in France – her home country – but will back in Canada after summer and do some more works so please keep visit the website if you are interested in customized unique jewellery. :)
After visiting her booth, I took personal time to look around the exhibition. So many interesting and amazing works caught my eye but I couldn’t take other booths’ photos due to the privacy issues. (I got permission from Ivanne for this of course. She said, “You know I like to share stuffs with people!”) However, I took some photos of view of the exhibitions.

Hope you could see how big this exhibition was. The tall building in the last photo is the new Toronto City Hall. The old one is just beside of this new building, across the road. That water is turning to the ice field in winter so people can enjoy skating here. :)
I spent more than 3 hours at the exhibition and later, seems like it’ll be raining so I decided to stay in the coffee shop for awhile to take some rest.

It was my first time wearing this shoes and to be honest, it was hard to take a long walk with this.. :( Still, I cannot let it stay at home because I love to wearing them. Actually when I took this photo, I remembered little saying from drama ‘Sex and the City’: “The fact is, sometimes it’s hard to walk in single women shoes. That’s why we need really special ones now and then, to make the walk little more fun.”
Me? Yes, I’m single and maybe that’s why I’m so into this sentence.. ;)

This is the old city hall across the road. Personally, I like this building more than the new one. This photo was my first trial with ‘retro’ colour version from the camera and I kinda liked the colour. I think the colour matches good with this antique building. :)
Guess this would be my last post in this blog. I might come back later though, if I have something interesting that I want to share it with you guys. Hope you enjoyed my postings from this blog. :)
Bonus photo!
I’m sorry if any one of them see this photo and doesn’t like it but I couldn’t resist to take this shot because they were such a beautiful couple.

Autumn Leaves’ – Final Project

Samsung Digital Imaging has provided the author of this article with the mentioned digital imaging device.
For jewellery program at my school, we have to clean up the bench that I worked after all classes are done. We also take back all projects that we’ve made throughout the term when we do bench clean up. The best project that I liked for this term is the last project that I made from ‘Metal Forming II’ class. To be honest, the finishing is not perfect and the construction is not perfectly done – I was short of time.. Well, can’t blame on time because I was bit lazy – but I like the design personally so I’m being brave here to show you my work..!
clip_image002
ST1000(CL65) 1/45s l F3.7 l ISO 80 l 6.3mm
This is my rough design concept. I learned ‘anticlastic’ and ‘folding’ methods from this class and I had to apply the skills that I’ve learned. (Anticlastic: Curved in opposite ways in two directions on a surface; from ‘Wiktionary’) So I tried to apply ‘anticlastic’ method for the round entrance of the necklace, and apply ‘folding’ method for the leaves.
clip_image003
ST1000(CL65) 1/45s l F3.7 l ISO 120 l 6.3mm
Middle of the progression! I’m on progress for anticlastic entrance, folding leaves, and chain. See the rectangular brass? That’s the beginning of the leaf. I had to anneal that plain brass to make it soft enough that I can fold in half just like the brass leaf above it. After I fold it, I cut out the exterior so it can look like a leaf, and then anneal it again with huge torch in silversmith room. When the brass became soft enough, I hammer the brass with forging hammer to not only stretching the metal but also to put the texture which will look like a leaf. After done hammering, anneal the metal again with torch and unfold the leaf – mostly by hand, but brass is harder than copper or silver so needed some pliers for help. Then, you’ll see the leaf look like the silver one on the top!
clip_image004

clip_image005
ST1000(CL65) 1/45s l F3.6 l ISO 80 l 6.3mm
This is ‘demo’ leaf that I demonstrated with copper before I work on with silver and brass. Shape wasn’t bad, but my professor worried about the sharp and cracked edges because it would be hurt the cloth or person’s skin who wears it. Personally, I liked the cracked edge since it gives more ‘leaf’ feeling but it’s unwearable according my professor so I had to let that go. Strange colour pattern on the back appeared because of the heat. I kind of like it. :)
clip_image006
ST1000(CL65) 1/30s l F3.7 l ISO 200 l 6.3mm
Jump rings for the chain! I first have to anneal long silver wire – approximately 100cm per chain, I guess – and then roll it on the small round mandrel so it can form the spring figure looks like on the right side of the photo. After that, cut the spring silver wire using saw to make individual jump rings. Now all I have to do is connect those jump rings one by one. Since my design has three long chains, it took some time to connect jump rings one by one but I actually liked it because I can work that part at home. :)
clip_image007
ST1000(CL65) 1/45s l F3.7 l ISO 120 l 6.3mm
Leaves are done! Except the stone setting on the silver leaf, I’ll do later. Synthetic corundum with red colour – probably ruby – is going to be set using tube setting method. :)
Well, those are some progression photos. Now, below photo is the final result that I came up with.
clip_image009
ST1000(CL65) 1/3s l F3.7 l ISO 200 l 6.3mm
To let some people know just in case who do not understand how this works as a necklace…

And that’s it! Hope you all enjoyed to see what I’ve done. :) I’m going to make more pieces next year so I’ll try to show more of my work IF I’m still a blogger here till then… Haha.
Bonus! My brother took a shot for me when I wore it. I thought perhaps I should make bigger leaf or smaller round entrance after I saw the photo, but.. Hope you’ll enjoy this one too! :)
