Sino Story 7: Nanjing, Xuan Wu Lake

Samsung Electronics has provided the author of this article with the mentioned digital imaging device.
Just around the corner from Nanjing’s bustling Hunan Road is one of Nanjing’s most beautiful natural attractions the Xuan Wu Lake (Chinese: 玄武湖 Xuan Wu Hu). This large lake divides Nanjing’s Gulu district from the Nanjing Train Station, and also sits at the foot of Mt. Zhongshan. Although the has changed names many times throughout history, it was finally dubbed “Xuan Wu” due to legend of the black dragon that is said to live in the bottom of the lake.

Xuan Wu Lake features a lovely park and public space near the front gate (Xuan Wu Men), the Ji Ming Temple, a walking section of the Nanjing Wall, and five islands situated in the middle of the lake. Xuan Wu Lake is a must see tourist location in Jiang Su Province, but also serves as a particularly lovely recreation point for Nanjing locals.

Cyber Lions Winner at Cannes 2010 ‘Nonja’ and…

The most famous orangutan in the world ‘Nonja’ is now the winner of two fabulous awards. It’s not even the first time Nonja won the marketing awards. Check the previous article about her here.
Samsung Electronics Austria has proudly announced that marketing idea of Samsung ST1000(CL65) with Nonja has won Silver Cyber Lions at the Cannes Lions(Category: Community Applications).
The International Advertising Festival – Cannes Lions – is the world’s biggest celebration of creativity in communications. As the most prestigious international annual advertising awards, over 24,000 entries from all over the world are showcased and judged at the Festival.
The followings are extracts from the original article of Cannes Lions.
Samsung needed a strong marketing idea to launch the ST1000(CL65), a digital camera that can upload pictures directly to facebook and is really easy to use. The budget available? Less than 50,000 USD. We wanted to prove the easy handling to the Facebook users by giving the camera to Nonja, an orangutan in the national zoo to take and upload pictures. The world’s first ape on facebook became a world wide phenomenon. Over 80’000 fans joined her account in just six weeks. The international press cover age was worth over 7 Mill. USD.”
In addition, Samsung’s Nonja project has won the ADC*E(Art Director Club of Europe) awards as Gold level of Web & use of media, in July.
ADC*E is the only Awards scheme in the world to bring all the European award winning work from the national schemes into one competition. Once submitted, the work is judged by a panel of over 50 top creatives, a wonderful opportunity for European professionals from advertising, design, editorial, illustration, film, new media and photography to come together and highlight their country’s creativity.
ADC*E is an association of European Creative Clubs. Its aim is to foster and reward creative excellence in European design and advertising, and this is why every year it takes place the ADC*E Awards -Best of European Design and Advertising.

Sino-Story 6: Nanjing, Hunnan Road

Welcome to the heart of Nanjing, China. This medium-sized city (by Chinese standards) might not be on the list of essential stops for foreign tourists visiting China for the first time, however Nanjing has plenty to offer and might be worth reconsidering. One Sunday afternoon, I spent a few hours strolling about the city trying to experience the flavor of the Nanjing first-hand. I immediately found that the pedestrian street at Hunan Road is a perfect venue for observing modern and traditional lifestyles coming to point.

Standing on this street you immediately notice the huge neon signs cluttering the view over-head and the numerous snack-vendor stands at street-level. Even in the light of day the visual impact is quite overwhelming, but like Las Vegas can only be truly appreciated after dark.

One of my favorite activities in China is eating local foods, especially street-food. These quick and cheap snack foods can be purchased from vendors with carts, wagons, or establish food counters in small shops at roadside. Many of these foods are unique domestic treats, and should be tried if only for the experience. Personally, I recommend the “bing tang hulu,” which is series of red, sugar glazed, round fruits on a skewer. Like a Chinese version of the American candied apple, yet with a flavor that is both sweet and tart. One can’t help but notice that Chinese street-food often comes on a stick and walking on a street crowded with people carrying sharp skewers feels just a little dangerous!

Located just a few hours by train from Shanghai, Nanjing is a worthy destination in terms of unique history, tourist attractions, and a glimpse into modern Chinese lifestyles. Hunan Road is an essential first stop in Nanjing, even if you only visit the city for a day or weekend. (John F Rash / RASHPHOTO / 叶摄)

Experience London nightscapes from the sky with Jason Hawkes and the Samsung EX1(TL500)

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, has partnered with leading aerial photographer Jason Hawkes to capture the artistic brilliance of London and its famous landmarks from above after dark, using Samsung EX1(TL500).

Hawkes, an award-winning photographer who has explored the world taking aerial shots from a helicopter, has shot a number of dramatic city night scenes over the last twenty years and partnered with Samsung to test the EX1(TL500)’s performance in these extreme conditions. The project, called ‘Samsung Nightscapes’, sees images of familiar, well-loved locations around the British capital, taken from a helicopter, being brought to life. The results of the project – Hawkes’ images and opinions on the EX1(TL500) – can be viewed here.

The launch of the Samsung Nightscapes collection coincides with the opening of consumer sales of the EX1(TL500), which is now available to buy in stores across the world. The 10 mega-pixel EX1(TL500), as a high-end compact digital camera designed specifically for today’s advanced and enthusiast photographers, is the new flagship model of the company’s extensive compact digital camera range.

Hawkes commented: “I’ve always loved taking aerial shots of urban landscapes – the perspective and layout that of a city that you see from the air is a totally different story from that on the ground, and shooting at night means that you can get the most dramatic images.”

He continued: “The EX1(TL500) is a very impressive and intuitive compact camera, with a great build. It has a remarkable set of features, such as the bright f/1.8 Schneider lens, which would be valuable for any photography enthusiast, and I was pleased to be able to test the extent of its capabilities during the low-light conditions on the shoot. The swivelling AMOLED screen on the back of the camera is a great feature, and proved useful in the helicopter during the shoot. And finally, the ability to work with RAW files was also a real bonus for a camera within this category – until now this has often remained within the domain of the pro models.”

Mr. Sang Jin Park, President of the Digital Imaging Business at Samsung Electronics, added: “We are thrilled to make the EX1(TL500) available to consumers and to celebrate this landmark product for the industry. This camera offers easy-to-use yet unparalleled features, such as its ultra-wide angle and notable speed. These, combined with the advanced nature of the lens, make it easy to take brilliant and better pictures with the EX1(TL500).”

For blur‑free images, the EX1(TL500)’s lens is also paired with Samsung’s Dual Image Stabilization technology. Plus, the EX1(TL500)’s three-inch, swivelling AMOLED screen and rotating AMOLED display will allow photographers to precisely frame their images the way they want and shoot from just about any angle, including overhead or low-to-the-ground shots – both perfect for when travelling by helicopter!

Our story has not yet finished. See more fabulous shots from that night, here.

Sino-Story 5: Fashion in China

Samsung Digital Imaging has provided the author of this article with the mentioned digital imaging device.

Mainland China may not be your first association with high fashion, however the availability of internationally and domestically produced luxury goods has recently become a predictable by-product of China’s economic development. Boheme, a Hangzhou based fashion line, recently began making a buzz both domestically (in China) and internationally. This clothing line was launched by designer Guo Bao Bao, who is well known in China as being one of the competitors in a domestically produced TV reality-show similar to America’s “Project Runway”. Guo Bao Bao was one a few designers presenting his work at the recent 7th Shanghai Textile and Apparel Trade Fair, and I was fortunate enough to join with a team of photographers and videographers to document the event.

During this week of fashion in Shanghai, Boheme was one of many clothing lines featured in an international design expo, which included both Western and Asian labels. Bao Bao was busy setting his expo booth, checking the clothing for the runway show, as well as giving interviews to reporters and a documentary team who were producing video stories about the rise of Boheme in China. Bao Bao appeared not to stop for rest during the entire week, but as Chinese culture dictates he did find time to enjoy several meals with his hardworking team.

Boheme is a relatively new fashion label, but is representative of the rapidly changing culture in China. The social-economic gap between rich and poor in China is ever growing, yet the Chinese government continues efforts to raise the quality of life for everyone in the country. As Boheme reaches for success, so do the migrants, office workers, and average citizens of the Chinese population. To imagine this country, where just a few decades ago Communist ideals focused on equality of the masses and the abolishment of the bourgeoisie can now have it’s own home grown fashion labels and growing class of wealthy elite – it truly is quite an incredible story.
